A 1-year-old dog named Blueberry and a 10-month-old cat named Meadow have found a permanent home after being adopted together by a couple in Maryland.
Both animals arrived at Last Chance Animal Rescue in Waldorf with injuries that required amputations. Laurie Jenkins, the organization's assistant director, said Blueberry was found on the street in poor condition. Hospital Manager Lauren Webb received a call about the dog on Christmas Eve. Webb recalled the staff saying, "We've got to help this dog. It's Christmas Eve. We've got to pull out a miracle." The hospital saved Blueberry's life, and staff noted her determination to survive.
One month after Blueberry's arrival, Meadow was transferred from a shelter in West Virginia. Jenkins explained that Meadow also had leg issues and suffered from an upper respiratory infection. A month later, during a lunch break, staff laid a blanket on the floor for animals needing extra care. Blueberry emerged from her area, and Meadow followed, laying directly on top of her. Jenkins said the two remained together from that moment forward. Webb described the meeting as "magic."
Once the pair had healed, the rescue organization posted their story on Facebook, requesting they be adopted as a unit. Rachel Clarke, who now cares for the animals, said her partner Kevin saw the post while scrolling on social media. The couple already has a three-legged cat at home. Clarke said they decided to apply for the pair despite the attention the story received. She noted that the animals sleep together and hang out constantly. Clarke added that even if they stumble, they do not let it stop them from getting back up. Jenkins said seeing the animals with their new family makes her "unbelievably happy."
