Anacortes launched a set of interactive decision guides this week to help applicants identify specific stormwater requirements during early project planning. The city states these tools are the first of their kind in Washington state.
The guides were released alongside new plain language guidance on the city’s website. These resources explain the steps needed for stormwater management and simplify the complex processes required by the Department of Ecology. A new map also allows applicants to check nearby infrastructure, pipe capacity, and drainage basins to determine if a project is exempt from flow control.
These tools follow an organizational change made in July. The mayor issued an executive order moving stormwater review duties from Public Works to the Planning Department. The move was intended to reduce hand-offs between departments and improve communication with applicants.
Anacortes manages stormwater to protect the Salish Sea. Rainwater flowing over streets and driveways can pick up pollutants like oil, sediment, and fertilizers before entering the water. Proper management protects the fish, shellfish, and wildlife that local residents rely on for fishing, crabbing, and recreation.
Applicants can access the new interactive tools and maps through the city’s permitting website at anacorteswa.gov/permitting. The city directs users to these resources to review the specific Minimum Requirements for their projects before submitting formal applications.
