Christa Pike, a 50-year-old inmate at Tennessee State Prison, reported on Friday that she is in constant pain and struggling to speak. The statement, issued by her legal team, marks her first public comment since surviving an execution attempt on September 30. Pike described the suffering as both physical and emotional, noting that she has not had a moment of relief since that night.

Pike was sentenced to death in 1995 for the murder of a 19-year-old classmate. She was 18 at the time of the crime, which involved torture, stabbing, and beating. Her boyfriend was also involved in the killing. The victim’s mother traveled from Florida to watch the execution take place.

Her lawyers argue that the two doses of phenobarbital administered during the procedure failed to enter her bloodstream. Instead, the drug pooled in her arms, causing burns and blisters. Pike was hospitalized and remained unconscious for several days following the procedure. Despite the medical complications, she remains on the execution list.

Pike is currently held in solitary confinement. Her legal team has asked a federal judge to permit her to interact with other prisoners. They claim the isolation has caused severe psychological harm and trauma. The team has also asked Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to change her sentence to life in prison.

Governor Lee told reporters last week that he suspects Pike’s sentence will remain unchanged unless the courts determine otherwise. He has organized an independent review of the failed execution. The state has also postponed its other scheduled lethal injection for this year.

Frank Strada, the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, announced his resignation following the incident. Pike said she continues to think about the victim’s family and the loss they have endured. She expressed deep hurt over what she called the incompetence that placed so many people in this position.
