Jackson sophomore Carter Corrigan won the District 1/2 4A Boys Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Lakewood High School.
Corrigan finished the race in 15 minutes, 27.3 seconds to claim the individual title. He defeated Skyline senior Yashveer Brar, who had been running level with him through the final stretch of the course.
The two runners remained close until the final 250 meters. Corrigan created distance as he rounded the final curve of the track at Lakewood High School. This race mirrored a scenario from the previous week at the Wesco Championships, where Corrigan also outkicked an opponent in the late stages to secure the win.
Corrigan said he recognized the position from the prior week and decided to trust his late speed. He noted that Brar did not appear to be conserving energy for a kick, which gave Corrigan confidence to push his advantage. “I was able to outkick him, so I thought, ‘I know I can do this again,’” Corrigan said.
Jackson assistant coach Marc Dugenet credited Corrigan’s decision to stay with the front pack during the first mile. Dugenet said the coaching staff was confident in Corrigan’s ability to finish strong. He noted that Corrigan prepared for the meet by placing himself in a position to strike late in the race. “He had a good plan during Wesco, and he stuck with that pack and put himself in a spot where he could get the win,” Dugenet said.
Corrigan’s performance at districts marked a substantial improvement over his previous season. Last year, he finished in 17 minutes, 17.7 seconds to place 53rd. That result followed a freshman campaign that included illness and injury, during which he ran 15 minutes, 48.3 seconds in early fall. Corrigan attributed his progress to consistent daily training and recovery. “Built back up my fitness, a lot of recovery, doing the right stuff,” Corrigan said.
The Jackson Timberwolves finished fourth as a team in the district meet. This placed secured one of five available spots for the team at the 4A State Championships. Junior Logan Rusher placed 16th with a time of 16 minutes, 1.5 seconds. Junior Asher Yochum placed 23rd with a time of 16 minutes, 9.6 seconds. Both runners would have qualified individually for the state meet based on their times.
Senior Jordan Schatz placed 54th in 16 minutes, 46.0 seconds. Freshman Maximiliano Rosas placed 58th in 16 minutes, 48.7 seconds. These two runners rounded out the top five finishers for Jackson at the district meet.
Corrigan will compete at his first 4A State Championships next week in Pasco. He said he does not expect to win the title but aims to place as high as possible. “I want to podium,” Corrigan said. He plans to use the same strategy he employed at the Wesco and district meets, looking to stick with a strong group and rely on his kick in the final stretch.
