For seven years, Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, told NFL officials that the idea of him performing at the Super Bowl was a dead end. He was the architect behind the league's entertainment strategy, but he kept himself in the background. On Monday night, that arrangement ended. The NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation announced that Jay-Z will headline the halftime show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on February 14, 2027.
The confirmation came with a promotional video showing the rapper seated inside the empty stadium, surrounded by goats. The caption read: "GOAT's out of the bag." This follows a week of speculation after Jay-Z finished his "Jay-Z 30" concert tour. The tour began with three dates at Yankee Stadium in New York, moved to London, and concluded with shows in Southern California over the weekend.
Roc Nation began its partnership with the NFL in 2019. The company advises on and helps produce the league's entertainment presentations. At the start of that relationship, Jay-Z told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, "If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now." Since that conversation, the halftime stage has hosted performers including Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and The Weeknd.
Jay-Z's career spans decades of music and business ventures. Born Shawn Carter, he has won 25 Grammy Awards from 89 nominations. His nomination count is the second-highest in history, behind his wife, Beyoncé, who has performed at two Super Bowls. His discography includes albums such as "Reasonable Doubt," "The Blueprint," and "The Black Album." Hits like "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," "99 Problems," and "Empire State of Mind" remain staples of popular music.
His debut album, "Reasonable Doubt," from 1996, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year. Beyond music, Jay-Z co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records and launched Roc Nation in 2008. The company now manages artists and athletes. He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
The announcement follows a pattern of rapid streaming growth for major halftime performers. In the hours following a recent Super Bowl, songs by the featured artist saw sharp gains across streaming charts and playlists. The next morning, one performer held the top six spots on Spotify's Top 50 U.S. chart, with another song at No. 8. Eleven additional tracks from that artist ranked in the Top 50 at the time.
