Boston Children's Hospital will receive a $200 million donation from the Boston Celtics ownership group. The gift, announced Wednesday, is the largest in the institution's history. Funds will support a new mental health campus in Brighton, research into childhood diseases, and advanced training for pediatric nurses.
John W. Henry, the Celtics' co-owner and founder of Granite Telecommunications, is providing half of the total amount. Henry pledged support for the hospital's psychiatric facility in December 2025. The ownership group then agreed to match his contribution. Peter Chisholm, the team's governor and chairman, said the gift reflects a commitment to the next generation in Boston and beyond.
Hospital CEO Dr. Kevin Churchwell stated that the size of the donation is unprecedented for the institution. He noted that the impact will be measured by the lives saved rather than the record set. The money will also establish an innovation fund and expand family programs at the hospital.
Henry is a known philanthropist who previously gave $50 million each to Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2018. His company recently made the largest team donation in history to support cancer research. The new facility being built in Brighton is located on the campus of Franciscan Children's.
Chisholm described the investment as a way to improve the futures of children. He said the ownership group wins when it invests in those futures. The donation will help advance research and expand access to care for patients and their families.
