Sergei Lavrov will travel to Atlanta this week to lead the Russian delegation at a G20 foreign ministers' meeting. The sessions are scheduled for October 30 and 31, 2026. This gathering serves as a precursor to the leaders' summit, where U.S. President Donald Trump hopes to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, confirmed the trip on October 28. She stated that the U.S. currently holds the G20 presidency. Zakharova noted that logistical details for the Russian team’s stay in the United States were finalized only recently. She indicated that some officials in Washington showed hesitation, specifically regarding the processing of visas by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Zakharova described the atmosphere as having an "impression" of reluctance.
The agenda for the Atlanta meeting focuses on geopolitical challenges that impact the global economy. Zakharova said participants will discuss conflicts and confrontational trends that undermine economic stability. She emphasized that the global economy is the central topic but requires analysis of geopolitical developments, particularly those she described as destructive.
Russia plans to use the forum to promote its vision for a multipolar world. According to Zakharova, this framework relies on the principles of the United Nations Charter. It also emphasizes respect for national sovereignty and the development of equal, mutually beneficial cooperation between nations.
The visit follows an invitation from Washington for Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami in December. The Kremlin stated that Russia appreciates the invitation and will decide on Putin’s attendance later. On October 17, Trump said he did not know if Putin would come. On October 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would be represented at the highest level at the Florida summit if Trump extends an invitation.
The Russian delegation’s presence in Atlanta highlights ongoing diplomatic interactions between the two nations. The timing coincides with final preparations for the December summit in Florida. Officials from various G20 member states are also expected to attend the ministerial meetings in Atlanta.
