NTSB investigators say the aircraft began breaking apart before hitting the ground during heavy rain.

Nine people died when a Learjet crashed into a residential street near West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, November 1. The aircraft exploded upon impact, killing all passengers and crew aboard.
A family representative confirmed the identities of several victims in a statement posted on Facebook. The group included Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp, along with their children, Emma and Charlie. Also killed were Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Cetina. One pilot, 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, was identified by her mother. The second pilot has not yet been confirmed.
National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman addressed reporters on Monday. He stated that evidence suggests the aircraft started breaking up before it struck the ground. Chapman noted that debris from the jet could be scattered far from the initial impact site.
“We do have some indication that the aircraft was breaking up before impact,” Chapman said. “We may find parts of the aircraft some distance away from the actual impact site.”
Weather conditions are a primary focus of the investigation. Rain fell heavily in the region on Sunday. One pilot reported icing conditions at high altitude in communications with air traffic control. Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti, a former NTSB and FAA investigator, suggested that key tail components may have been lost during turbulence or a nose dive. He explained that losing those components makes the airplane uncontrollable, which could explain the missile-like profile observed just before impact.
Chapman said investigators must still determine the specific weather conditions at 35,000 feet. The plane was originally equipped with a cockpit voice recorder that investigators hope to recover. NTSB investigator Timothy Monville described the scene work as a several-day process. He identified recovering major wreckage from the crater on the roadway as the biggest obstacle.
