Spartanburg, South Carolina, police are investigating a weekend shooting that left two teenagers dead outside a fast food restaurant.
Officers responded to the Cook Out on John B. White Sr. Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, following reports of multiple gunshots. Police found two individuals with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Paramedics administered first aid at the scene before transporting the victims to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where both died.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 15-year-old Jayden Marek Watson and 17-year-old Shane Carter Dawkins. A third person was also shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A family member transported that individual to a hospital.
Police Chief Art Littlejohn stated that no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified as of this writing. The case remains under active investigation by Spartanburg authorities.
Littlejohn described the victims as local teenagers who were out after Halloween. "I want to be totally clear, the young people that were out here were not bad young people; they were just kids," Littlejohn said. "After Halloween night, going trick-or-treating, going out to get something to eat, and then someone being irresponsible, pulled out a gun and started shooting."
The next step in the investigation involves reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to identify the person responsible for firing the shots.
