Meridian volleyball captured the 1A District 1 championship on Tuesday night in Laurel by sweeping Lynden Christian in three sets. The final scores were 25-22, 25-23, and 25-20. The victory marks the first district title for the Trojans since 2023 and secures their place in the District 1-2 crossover match this Saturday.

Meridian head coach Angie Short credited the home crowd for providing a boost to the team’s energy. Short noted that the players started the match with high intensity and maintained control of the pace throughout the contest. She emphasized that the team’s preparation paid off as they executed their game plan effectively against a disciplined opponent.

Junior outside hitter Melanie Short led Meridian with 16 kills and 13 digs. Senior outside hitter Eden Bernardy contributed eight kills and 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Sierra James recorded three of the team’s four blocked shots. James stepped into a starting role this season following the graduation of the previous year’s senior middles, Gracie Pap and Taya Benson.

James has recorded 52 kills and 27 blocks in the 2026 season. Her performance contrasts with her junior year totals of 11 kills and eight blocks. She joined other players in taking on new varsity responsibilities, including senior libero Amelia Koning and junior setter Kendall Stacy. James said the team worked hard in practice and that winning on their home court provided a satisfying conclusion for the senior class.

The match remained close in the first set until the score reached 19-19. Meridian then pulled away after Presley Culp served an ace. Short finished the set with a spike for the 25-22 lead. In the second set, the Trojans trailed 19-17 before using their final timeout. They tied the set after a Lynden Christian error and a kill by junior opposite Madyn Cline-Malarz. Short again scored the final kill to close out the second set 25-23.

Meridian dominated the third set, taking control early and never looking back. Short served an ace to clinch the sweep and the district championship. The Trojans finished the match with nine aces. Culp and sophomore Hailee Thomas each served three of those aces. Short said the team remains focused on the upcoming winner-to-state match in Yakima.

Meridian will face either Bear Creek, Eastside Prep, or Overlake in the bi-district match on Saturday, Nov. 7. The District 2 school will host the event. Meridian has already defeated both Overlake and Bear Creek during the regular season. James said the team will not overlook any potential opponent and will return to practice the next day to prepare.

Lynden Christian has another opportunity to advance to the district crossover on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Lyncs will play at 7 p.m. against either Nooksack Valley or Mount Baker. Senior libero Lyla Parriera led Lynden Christian with 17 digs. Senior middle blocker Jocelyn Eshuis recorded eight kills, while sophomore middle blocker Jess DeJong added seven.
