Navajo Nation officials announced on October 30, 2026, that recent flooding has damaged 500 homes in Shiprock and forced 200 evacuations.
More than 150 residents are currently sheltering in temporary facilities as floodwaters recede. Local families continue to assess property damage and manage shortages of basic supplies. One household at a local donation center reported going five days without running water.
The crisis followed a period of severe weather that overwhelmed infrastructure in the region. Virginia Kirk responded by opening her business, The Mod, as a central hub for relief. The shop, located off Highway 64 in Shiprock, now accepts and distributes donations to affected families. Kirk also sends supplies to smaller, nearby Navajo communities that were also hit by the water.
Kirk described the cumulative effect of local challenges and the disaster. “We have so many challenges here, and then when a disaster comes through, like the flooding, it kind of piles on,” Kirk said. The shop serves as a distribution point for goods brought in by both local residents and outside donors.
Arthur Gonzalez traveled from Kerrville, Texas, to deliver a trailer full of supplies. He cited a July 2025 flood in his hometown as the motivation for his trip. “I do this out of my own heart, or we do this out of our own hearts,” Gonzalez said. Kirk noted that the contributions from outside New Mexico demonstrate cross-community support.
“It’s just community helping communities,” Kirk said. The Mod remains open for donations and distribution in Shiprock. Families in need are directed to visit the location on Highway 64 to access the available resources.
The flood response continues across the Navajo Nation as officials monitor conditions in affected areas. The 500 damaged homes represent a major portion of the housing stock in the immediate vicinity of Shiprock. Shelter populations are expected to fluctuate as families return to assess their properties.
