Marcus Javelosa and Emerson Varga are working to bring Ferndale School Board student representatives to a wider audience this school year. The two plan to hold pep assemblies at Vista and Horizon Middle School. Their goal is to ensure students at every level understand the role of the board and feel comfortable sharing their thoughts.

The current student representatives are continuing a two-year effort to increase student awareness. Previous reps began visiting elementary and middle schools to give younger students a voice in district matters. Javelosa, a senior, and Varga, a junior, say this year’s focus is on expanding that reach.

“It’s our job to fully represent the school district,” Javelosa said. He noted that students at all ages have valuable perspectives. Varga said she tries to be accessible so students can bring suggestions or concerns to her. She added that student needs vary by age group, with middle schoolers often focused on their upcoming transition to high school.

Student input plays a direct role in board decisions. Javelosa pointed to the recent cell phone policy as an example. He said that when students understood the reasoning behind the rule, their support for the policy shifted. “I saw the shift in students,” he said. “It was amazing.”

Superintendent Kristi Dominguez supports the student representatives, encouraging them to speak up even when their views differ from board members. Javelosa said that staff backing helps build confidence. He also noted that board members actively involve student voice in their decision-making process.

The role has helped both students develop professional skills. Javelosa, who was once nervous in front of crowds, now speaks regularly to diverse groups. Last year, he and former representative Harleen Malli spoke at the Washington State School Directors’ Association conference. Javelosa said he looks forward to attending the conference again this year to network with other student advocates.

Varga said the experience is preparing her for future interviews and professional interactions. Javelosa has taken on a mentoring role, offering advice on board topics and meeting attire. He hopes Varga will continue to reach out to the student representative network even after he graduates.
