The 2026-27 college basketball season features its first ranked matchup on Monday night. The No. 1 Florida Gators host the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes in a contest that carries a betting total of 160.5 points. This figure sets a low bar for scoring, reflecting the defensive nature of both teams and their historical rivalry.

The in-state rivals meet for the 71st time at the 2026 Orion180 Tipoff Classic. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Fla. Florida enters the season as the top team in the AP Poll for the second time in program history. The Gators return the core group that captured the national title in 2025, following a 27-8 record last year. Miami, led by first-year head coach Jai Lucas, finished 26-9 and ranked 24th in the final AP Poll of the 2025-26 season.

Betting lines list Florida as a 5.5-point favorite. The SportsLine Projection Model, which simulates every college basketball game 10,000 times, projects a defensive struggle. The model predicts the teams will combine for 158 points. It places its pick on the Under 160.5 total, a choice that aligns with the series history. Each of the last eight meetings between these programs has finished under 150 points.

The trend extends to the teams' individual performances. Last season, the Under hit in 67% of Miami's games when the Hurricanes were underdogs. For Florida, the total was not reached in 60% of regular season games. The Gators posted the No. 2 scoring defense in the SEC, while Miami ranked fourth in the ACC in points allowed per game. The model's simulation results show the Under connecting in 58% of scenarios.

Florida defeated Miami in their last meeting in November 2025. That game also ended at a neutral site. The total score in that contest was 150 points, which fell well below the listed total of 171.5 points at the time. The model indicates that one side of the spread hits in nearly 60% of simulations, though the specific side is available on the SportsLine platform. The betting run for the model's top-rated side picks stands at 28-22 dating back to 2025.

The game marks the opening of the competitive schedule for both programs. Florida's status as the top-ranked team places it in a position of strength against a Miami squad that showed promise in its first season under Lucas. The 5.5-point spread and low total suggest a close, controlled contest where defensive execution will determine the outcome. The 71st meeting of this rivalry continues a pattern of competitive, low-scoring basketball between the two in-state programs.
