The University of Washington Huskies defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 17-10 on Saturday in a game decided by a fourth-quarter offensive shift and a long defensive return. Head coach Jedd Fisch turned to backup quarterback Demond Williams Jr. with 10:01 remaining, a move that sparked the final scoring drive of the contest.
Washington trailed 7-3 entering the fourth quarter. Starter Elijah Brown had completed 19 of 30 passes for 136 yards but could not overcome a defensive front that limited the Huskies to 29 rushing yards. Williams entered the game after missing the first half due to a rib injury sustained in a loss to Iowa on October 9.
The Huskies' offensive struggle continued for several minutes after Williams took the field. A false start and two incomplete passes set the team up on third-and-15. Williams then ran for 17 yards to secure a first down. After a sack on the next play, he threw an 18-yard completion to receiver Chris Lawson on fourth down to keep the drive alive.
Two plays later, Lawson caught a short pass at the 20-yard line. He used a spin move to reach the end zone, giving Washington a 10-7 lead with 1:30 left on the clock. Lawson finished the game with 12 catches for 155 yards, including a 47-yard reception on the critical fourth-down play.
Nebraska’s offense stalled following the touchdown. On the second play of the drive, safety Alex McLaughlin intercepted a pass from Anthony Colandrea. McLaughlin returned the ball 48 yards for the game-winning score. The interception marked the third pick-six for the Huskies in the game.
McLaughlin had earlier allowed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Carter Nelseon in the first quarter. He credited the coaching staff for his performance, noting that the defense wanted to attack the ball rather than just defend it. He finished with eight tackles and two pass breakups.
Nebraska started the season with a 5-0 record but has lost its last three games. The Huskies improved to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten. Punter Hunter Green led the special teams, kicking eight punts for 391 yards, with five landing inside the Nebraska 20-yard line.
The Huskies' first four drives ended in punts. They did not score until the final drive. Kicker Tyler Robles hit a 50-yard field goal late in the first half to cut the lead to 7-3, but that was the only other point Washington scored. Nebraska outgained Washington 224 to 118 yards in the first half.
Lawson secured the victory after the final whistle by returning Nebraska’s onside kick. The win marks Washington’s second consecutive conference victory. Fisch cited the team’s resilience in the postgame press conference, noting that players found ways to make plays despite early struggles.
