A single adult living in Massachusetts now needs an annual pre-tax income of $127,213 to cover basic necessities, discretionary spending, and savings. This figure places the state at the top of the list for the highest cost of living for individuals in 2026, according to data released by SmartAsset. The company analyzed cost-of-living estimates to determine the financial threshold required for a comfortable lifestyle across all 50 states.

The new figures indicate that a six-figure salary no longer guarantees financial stability for most households. In 40 states, a family of four requires at least $200,000 a year to meet their minimum basic needs. The national average for a single adult has crossed the $80,000 mark, while the requirement exceeds $100,000 in nearly half of the country's states.

For households with two working adults and two children, the financial burden is heaviest in Massachusetts. Families in the state require $329,555 annually to live comfortably. Hawaii follows closely for individual workers, where a single adult needs $129,002 to maintain the same standard of living.

Costs have risen sharply in the Mountain West and Northeast. Montana recorded the largest year-over-year increase in the income needed for a single adult, jumping 8.6% from 2025 to 2026. The new requirement in Montana is $100,797. New York follows with an 8.4% increase, setting the bar at $124,342 for a single resident.

Washington state residents face a more modest increase compared to neighboring states. The income needed for a single adult in Washington rose 0.9% this year to $110,614. This places the state at number 39 on the list of year-over-year changes, well below the national leaders in cost growth.

The lowest costs for a comfortable lifestyle remain in the South and Appalachia. West Virginia is the least expensive state for a single adult, requiring an income of $81,245. For a family of four, Mississippi offers the lowest threshold at $187,533 a year.

Six states saw the required income for a single adult decline from 2025 to 2026. Tennessee recorded the largest drop at 1.7%, with the new requirement set at $89,898. Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas also saw decreases in the necessary annual income.

SmartAsset derived these estimates using the MIT Living Wage Calculator. The organization treated the living wage as the cost for necessities, which accounts for 50% of a budget under the 50/30/20 rule. The remaining 30% covers discretionary spending, and 20% is allocated to savings for retirement and emergencies. The data reflects the most recent information available as of February 2026.

The analysis provides a state-by-state breakdown of financial requirements for workers. While housing, groceries, and transportation costs continue to pressure budgets, the specific thresholds vary by region. The report serves as a baseline for workers assessing their financial standing against local cost structures.

The study does not account for regional differences within states or specific household circumstances beyond the standard models. It focuses on the pre-tax income needed to cover minimum basic needs for both single adults and families of four. The figures represent a static snapshot of current economic conditions in each state.
