Private equity firms are increasingly targeting regional real estate markets in the American South. Sundance Bay, a Salt Lake City-based real estate private equity firm founded in 2012, completed the acquisition of two self-storage facilities in Alabama.
The firm purchased the property at 480 Wildwood Circle North in Homewood, which now operates as Extra Space Storage. Built in 2021, this site contains 385 units and provides 46,850 net rentable square feet. The deal also included a second facility at 3240 Veterans Circle in Trussville. Together, the two properties offer 841 units and a combined 118,385 square feet of rentable space.
This transaction represents the first self-storage investment for Sundance Bay within the Birmingham metropolitan statistical area. The acquisitions serve as the firm's 11th and 12th self-storage purchases in the past year. The Homewood office operates Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. and closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Local construction activity also remained active this month. Robins & Morton, a Homewood-based construction firm located at 400 Shades Creek Parkway, served as the general contractor for the new Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital in South Miami, Florida. The three-story facility spans 100,000 square feet and features 62 private inpatient rooms. The design allows for the opening of an additional 30 private rooms to increase capacity.
Robins & Morton also broke ground on the Lawrence Medical Center Outpatient Facility in Moulton. The $14 million project covers 10,000 square feet and will include extended-hours urgent care, advanced diagnostic imaging, respiratory therapy, laboratory services and a community room. The firm secured a 20-acre site for this project to allow for future expansion. Additionally, the company celebrated the ribbon cutting of the North Mississippi Medical Center Crossover Medical Plaza in Tupelo, Mississippi.
That Tupelo facility is a three-story building totaling 46,600 square feet. It houses an urgent care center, dermatology clinic, retina clinic and ophthalmology clinic. The plaza also includes the first dedicated pediatric urgent care in the North Mississippi region, which operates seven days a week. These projects demonstrate the firm's ongoing work across multiple states.
Samford University in Homewood announced a record-setting enrollment of 6,522 students. This figure represents the largest freshman class in the school's 185-year history. U.S. News & World Report ranked Samford No. 1 as the best value among Alabama four-year universities for 2027. The university also ranked 93rd in the nation.
