The Seattle Seahawks acquired All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts in a trade that sent a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick to Indianapolis. The deal, which was confirmed by a league source on Tuesday morning, is contingent on Nelson passing a physical examination. If finalized, the move ends a nearly nine-year stint for the 30-year-old lineman with the Colts.

Nelson enters this transaction as a pending free agent. He is in the final year of a four-year, $80 million contract extension that he signed in September 2022. The Colts chose to trade him before the NFL’s November 10 deadline rather than risk losing him without compensation in the coming offseason. By striking the deal now, Indianapolis retains control over its future assets, specifically securing a compensatory pick for 2028.

The trade comes one week after the Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard. The team started the season with a 2-5 record. Nelson has maintained an All-Pro level of play, but his situation in Indianapolis became uncertain as the team struggled to find a stable quarterback situation. He blocked for Andrew Luck during a wild-card win in 2018 and has appeared in just one playoff game since, a loss to the Buffalo Bills in the 2020 season.

Nelson was selected by the Colts with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He has earned eight consecutive Pro Bowl selections, a feat matched in NFL history only by Joe Thomas, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023. Nelson has started all 136 games he has played for the Colts and has not missed a game since 2021. His accolades include three first-team All-Pro selections and three second-team honors.

The Seahawks’ offensive line has faced challenges this season. Right guard Anthony Bradford missed five games due to injury before returning on Sunday. Left tackle Charles Cross injured his ankle during Sunday’s game against the Chiefs and may be out for an unknown period. Without a consistent interior presence, the unit has underperformed compared to the previous year. The arrival of Nelson provides immediate depth and stability on the left side of the line.

Nelson has played primarily at left guard for the past 13 seasons, aside from a small number of snaps at left tackle. Current Seahawks left guard Grey Zabel, who started 20 games on the right side in college, could move to right guard. This would allow Bradford, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, to move to a backup role or be released. Alternatively, the Seahawks could shift Zabel to center and bench Jalen Sundell, who has been effective since taking over as a starter.

The acquisition aligns with the strategic approach of new owners Vinod and Neeru Khosla, who have stated a desire for the team to remain a Super Bowl contender. General manager John Schneider has previously retained deadline acquisitions such as Leonard Williams in 2023, Ernest Jones IV in 2024, and Rashid Shaheed in 2025. Schneider has historically avoided paying top-market salaries for interior offensive linemen, with the current league high for a guard held by Tennessee’s Peter Skoronski at $25 million per year.

In Indianapolis, the Colts will likely turn to rookie fourth-round pick Jalen Farmer or undrafted free agent Dalton Tucker to fill the starting left guard vacancy. Farmer has played three offensive snaps this season, while Tucker has not played this year but started nine games across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The trade deadline remains open, and both teams continue to evaluate their rosters as they approach the final week of the trade window.
