President Donald Trump is holding final campaign events in Iowa and Kansas on Sunday, two days before the midterm elections. The Republican Party confirmed the schedule after Trump initially canceled the stops but reversed his decision at the last minute. He will speak at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa, starting at 2 p.m. Central time. Later in the day, he is set to address a crowd at the Salina, Kansas, regional airport at 7 p.m. Central time.
These states are critical for the Republican Party to maintain its majority in the Senate. Trump has won Iowa in three previous elections and Kansas in two. His current approval rating stands at approximately 34% according to the latest Quinnipiac poll. Despite his recent performance in these areas, he aims to provide a final push for the Republican ticket.
Polling data indicates the races are competitive. A recent Marist poll shows Republican Representative Ashley Hinson trailing Democrat Josh Turek by three points in Iowa. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton has taken a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall for the first time. The last time Iowa sent a Democrat to the Senate was in 2008. Kansas has not sent a Democrat to the chamber in nearly a century.
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana expressed confidence in the Republican chances despite the polling numbers. He stated that he has observed voters on the ground and believes the surveys are inaccurate. “I’ve seen the voters on the ground. I’m telling you, the polls are wrong. They’re inaccurate. They’re underrepresenting Republicans,” Johnson said.
The outcome of Tuesday's election will determine whether Trump's presence aids or hinders the Republican candidates. The final results will clarify the impact of his late arrival in these two key states.
