Kimi Antonelli secured his first Formula One world championship on Sunday at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. The Mercedes driver finished third in the 71-lap race, extending his lead in the drivers' standings to an insurmountable 119 points. At 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli became the youngest champion in the sport's history, breaking the record previously held by Sebastian Vettel.

The race was marked by extreme volatility, including two safety car deployments and a 33-minute red flag stoppage. Valtteri Bottas suffered a high-speed suspension failure on lap 46, pitching his Cadillac into the barriers at turn one. After receiving medical attention, Bottas walked to an ambulance and gave a thumbs up before being released from the medical center. The field restarted with 25 laps remaining.

Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull, marking his second victory of the season. Lewis Hamilton took second place for Ferrari, while Charles Leclerc finished fourth. Hamilton started from pole position, a milestone that gave him his 105th career front-row start. However, he lost the lead to Leclerc early in the race after a wheel-to-wheel battle. Leclerc cut turn four and crossed the grass, prompting Hamilton to complain over the radio that he was pushed out by his teammate. Stewards penalized Leclerc five seconds, but Hamilton remained behind his teammate after both drivers pitted.

Antonelli celebrated with visible emotion as he crossed the finish line. His race engineer, Peter Bonnington, told him over the radio, "Get in there, Kimi. Champion of the world." Antonelli replied, "We did it thank you so much." He told the crowd afterwards, "I’m speechless. I’m trying to process what has just happened." He noted that he backed off on the final lap because he was getting emotional and could not see the track clearly.

The result cemented Mercedes' position in the constructors' championship. The team now holds 630 points, leading Ferrari by 126 points. Mercedes could clinch the team title in Brazil next weekend. In the drivers' standings, Verstappen moved into second place, Hamilton is third, and George Russell dropped to fourth. Russell, who had needed to win to stay competitive, finished sixth after a poor start and a 10-second penalty for colliding with Isack Hadjar. Antonelli became the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

The podium ceremony featured an Italian flag wrapped around Antonelli's shoulders as he sprayed champagne. He stood alongside Verstappen and Hamilton, acknowledging the battles ahead. The race concluded with Verstappen leading the overall standings behind the new champion, while Russell trails Antonelli by 130 points with the season continuing.
