Hours before Election Day, political analysts are closely monitoring three Senate contests in Texas, Michigan, and Ohio. The results in these states will dictate which party holds the majority in the U.S. Senate.

In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton is running against state Rep. James Talarico. Paxton secured the Republican nomination with a presidential endorsement, defeating incumbent John Cornyn. However, his path to the top of the ticket was complicated by a state House impeachment over corruption charges, which ended in acquittal. A win for Talarico would break a decades long pattern by delivering Texas its first Democratic U.S. senator in more than thirty years.

The Michigan race features public health administrator Abdul El-Sayed against Rep. Mike Rogers. El-Sayed has faced scrutiny over his Muslim faith, with President Donald Trump claiming unproven extremist ties. El-Sayed rejected these accusations, stating his primary allegiance is to the U.S. Constitution. The contest gained further complexity when Rep. Haley Stevens, a former primary opponent, withdrew her support for El-Sayed on Sunday to back Rogers.

In Ohio, Sen. Jon Husted is challenging former Sen. Sherrod Brown. Husted was appointed to fill the vacancy left when J.D. Vance moved to the vice presidency. Brown is seeking a political comeback after losing his 2024 reelection bid to Sen. Bernie Moreno. The victor will serve the remaining two years of Vance's original term.

These three elections are the primary factors determining the post-election balance of power in Washington. Each race presents a distinct narrative, from local political baggage to religious identity and career resurrections.
