The NBA will not play any games on Tuesday, Nov. 3, giving players and fans a day off during the regular season. This marks the fourth time in five years that the league has skipped Election Day.
The decision follows a pause in 2025, when the league did schedule games. In 2022, the NBA first introduced the no-game policy to promote civic engagement. The initiative continued through 2023 and 2024 before a brief break in the practice last year.
When releasing the 2026-27 season schedule, the league confirmed the return of the initiative. A statement from the organization noted that no games are scheduled for Tuesday as the league encourages the community to make plans to vote and participate in the civic process.
The pause is brief. All 30 NBA teams took the court yesterday, Monday, Nov. 2. After the one-day break, the league resumes with 14 games on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Election Day is one of the few dates in the regular season with zero matchups, alongside Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. The All-Star break is also set for Feb. 19-24, 2027.
While the NBA is dark, other leagues are active. The NHL has 11 games scheduled for Tuesday. Dozens of men's and women's college basketball games are also on the slate.
